On April 20, 2010, Marty,
Ivy, and big brother Zane, welcomed baby Hazel to the family. Needless to say, Grandpa Small is thrilled.
Britt's Licks: For
many years, I have had a reputation for removing tattered American Flags, by one method or another, and encouraging other
people to do the same. I have exhorted audiences to join me in my campaign, and I've even cleaned out several towns,
cutting down their tattered flags, and taking them with me. I visited the late, great entertainer, Martha Raye,
known to the veterans as "Colonel Maggie," at her home in Hollywood, just before she died. She said to
me, "Oh, you're the 'tattered flags guy'. The flag in front of my house is tattered. Would you
please take it with you when you leave?" I fulfilled her request, and I still have Colonel Maggie's last flag
in a flag case. I couldn't bear to destroy it. The nickname that she gave me has driven me on in my mission
to change the way people mistreat our beautiful red, white, & blue. So many Americans have given their lives under that
flag. The veterans have fought for the flag, and they are the keepers, and the defenders of our flag. This year,
the American Legion, and the Disabled American Veterans are passing resolutions designating that tattered American Flags are
desecrated flags, and that displaying a tattered American Flag is flag desecration. It's time for every American
to start looking at the flags being displayed in their towns. We need to take it upon ourselves to ask people to take
down their tattered American Flags, or take them down ourselves. I would suggest that everyone should boycott any business
that displays a tattered American Flag. We need to re-instill respect for our flag, to stand when it passes, to place
our hands or hats over our hearts, and to stand reverently for the National Anthem. Our children are watching us,
and it's time to teach them respect for the American Flag, for our troops who are serving, and for those
who have given their lives. It's time for truly patriotic Americans to stand up and defend the American Flag as
the symbol of our freedom. Freedom that has been paid for with American lives. God Bless America, God
Bless our troops, and God Bless our veterans. Here is a good example of action, in a message that was sent
to me:
Britt, I was at a strip mall today and outside of an Ultra Food store
was a pathetic flag hanging by one hook and tattered as well. I called right then and there and spoke with a manager and asked
her is she was aware of the condition of the flag that was flying outside of her store. She told me she was not, but would
look into it. I went next door to run my errand and was out in about 10 minutes. I decided to pull up in front of the
flag to take a picture and there was a cherry picker from Folger's Flag Company there
to replace the flag. I couldn't believe it. From the time I called the store to the time a new flag was flying it was
less than 1/2 hour.
It does work. Bob Kolling
